Oklahoma Water Resources Center

Colorado Project Spotlight

2017 Student Water Conference Participants

The Oklahoma Water Resources Center will host the annual Student Water Conference March 23-24, 2017.

Manijeh Mahmoudzadeh Varzi, a graduate student from Colorado State University, will be participating in the upcoming Student Water Conference. Manijeh, is majoring in irrigation and drainage in the civil and environmental engineering department of CSU. She will present on her research project titled, “Deficit Irrigation in Practice,” at the conference.

Her project seeks to answer the question of how deficit irrigation can be used to conserve water on the farm and then transfer conserved water to urban areas. This research focuses on agricultural water resource transfers to urban areas and the practice’s effects on rural communities in Colorado.

“The project tries to find a way to share limited water among different users so that all can benefit from it,” said Manijeh.

Through her research, she strives to create a system by which landowners may make informed decisions about proper use of water resources.

“I am hoping to create a decision-making support system for farmers to help them decide how much water they want to dedicate to farm uses and how much to lease out to consumers,” explained Manijeh.

This is a very relevant issue in many areas of the country as water is now recognized as a diminishing resource. While the hydrological cycle insures water will continue to be replenished, it does not guarantee the resource will be replenished in the same area. Management measures must be taken to ensure water resource sustainability in the areas that need it most. This is the goal of Manijeh’s project, making the presentation an interesting and significant addition to the conference.

As a high school graduate, Manijeh became fascinated with irrigation after researching possible college majors. Since then her interest in water research has continued to grow. She has worked diligently over the last several years to learn as much as possible in the water resources field focusing on irrigation, drainage and water management issues. Manijeh especially enjoys the field work surveys and the experimentation required by her major. She hopes to apply the knowledge gained through these experiences to water resource issues in her area.

She originally learned about the opportunities offered by the Student Water Conference through hearing from Saleh Taghvaeian, OSU Cooperative Extension water resources assistant specialist, at another conference. Manijeh hopes to obtain feedback on her research as well as practice in her presentation skills. To learn more about Manijeh’s research, plan to attend the Student Water Conference March 23-24.
