2016 REU Students

Stephanie Estell

“My parents raised my brother and me in the suburbs of Columbus, Ohio, where I attended one of the first STEM high schools in the state. I am currently a junior at Ohio Northern University and I am majoring in Environmental and Field Biology and minoring in Communication Studies. At Ohio Northern I have had the opportunity to follow my passion for field biology and to participate in undergraduate research focusing on invasive species in freshwater systems. I love to travel, and my goal is to explore the country working in the fields of conservation and restoration biology for both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.”

Kori Groenveld

“I am Kori Groenveld, a rising junior at Lewis and Clark College.  I am majoring in Environmental Studies, with a Hispanic Studies Minor.  I am a runner on the cross country and track & field teams here, and an Environmental Studies Symposium Co-Chair.  I enjoy hiking, surfing, reading, and beating my brother in FIFA.  In the future, I’m not exactly sure what I want to do, but I hope to conduct environmental research and later become an environmental lawyer.”

Kayla Kassa

"I am from the small town of Sandpoint, ID. I love to draw, dance, snowboard, hike or pretty much anything outdoors. I am studying Civil Engineering at Gonzaga University and want to take my studies further into the water resources area within civil engineering. I am very excited to enhance my knowledge of water resource engineering with the Oklahoma State University Water Resource REU Program this summer."

Ashley Kinsey

“I like to spend my free time exploring outside, playing ultimate frisbee, and cooking as much as possible. Growing up on the Gulf Coast, I have always had a fascination with water and how its systems function. My personal goal this summer is to learn first hand about watershed restoration in order to prepare myself for graduate school and my future career as an ecological engineer.”

Paige Kleindl

Paige Kleindl is an undergraduate at Ohio Northern University from Goodrich, Michigan. She is double majoring in Environmental and Field Biology and Bachelors of Arts in Applied Music Studies Concentration Percussion. Her primary interests include ecology, freshwater ecology, botany, periphyton, macroinvertebrates, and benthic community structure. Once she receives her bachelor's degree, Paige plans on continuing on to graduate school to obtain a Ph.D. in freshwater ecology.

Laura Mackey

“Hello! I’m Laura Mackey, a first-year biology student at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. As a member of this summer’s stream team, I hope to gain experience in the lab while also developing the hands-on skills necessary for scientific field work. Although I haven’t pinpointed my career goals, I know that I want to work in the biological or environmental sciences as they relate to the conservation, rehabilitation, and safety of our changing planet. I have great excitement for my and the whole stream team’s work this summer!”

Alexandra Shipman

“I am a Photographic and Imaging Technology major at Rochester Institute of Technology. I hope to use my skill set in photography and science to illustrate field research and promote science through social media. After I complete my undergraduate degree I would like to attend grad school and study environmental science. Aside from school I enjoy long distance running, music, and movies. I am looking forward to a wonderful, science-filled summer at OSU!”
