The Spotty Rain Campaign aims to share resources for managing drought risks and to encourage community participation in volunteer drought monitoring.

Objectives

Our work is centered around exploring and improving the ways people find, use, and share science-based resources about drought. Our goal is to increase awareness through developing library programs and media resources for rural communities.

Activities

We work alongside the Southeast Oklahoma Library System to encourage nature inquiry to youth and their families through the Backyard Explorers program. This program includes weekly videos and logbook-style challenges that are made to be distributed in rural and small libraries.

In addition, we partner with the Community Collaborative for Rain, Hail and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS) to enhance precipitation reports for improving drought predictions to better farm management and community planning.

Our project is generously funded by the National Science Foundation through the division Advancements for Informal STEM Learning. Informal STEM education (ISE) encourages “lifelong learning in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM)” outside the traditional classroom setting.
