USGS Invites you to their OTWSC Webinar titled "Differences in Resiliency and Vulnerability to Urban Flooding in the Trinity-San Jacinto River Basins" by Erik Smith, Hydrologist, Oklahoma-Texas Water Science Center.
The U.S. Geological Survey Integrated Water Science basins are an initiative to use regional focus areas for intensive observation, understanding, and prediction studies in support of integrated assessments that can be extended to a broader region. The Trinity-San Jacinto River basins regional focus area was selected to gain a better understanding of the differences in resiliency and vulnerability experienced across Texas communities to urban flooding. To address this topic, the study will leverage existing flood inundation models to develop new flood extents under future climate and land-use scenarios, in particular Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston. Simulated discharges as input to these models will be provided by developing scenarios with a hydrologic modeling framework (PyWatershed, based on the Precipitation Runoff Modeling System model) that encompasses both basins. Additional work includes identifying the key societal variables to consider for urban flood risks in the region. The outcomes from this study will link urban flooding effects to land cover change and climate variability, in addition to developing spatial and temporal relationships between societal and flood risk factors.
